چکیده

The foraging characteristics of Hammond’s and Western flycatchers in northwestern California varied with different stages of the breeding cycle during the breeding seasons (early April-mid August) in 1984 and 1985. The species’ behaviors did not always vary in parallel nor were all foraging behaviors distributed equally during the breeding cycle. For example, the direction of aerial foraging movements for both species did not differ between stages, In contrast, the predominant type of foraging activity (either hover-glean or flycatch) differed by stage of the breeding cycle for Western Flycatchers but not for Hammond’s Flycatchers. Both birds differed in their use of foraging substrates and plant species among breeding stages. Western Flycatchers did not differ in position (height of foraging bird or distance to the canopy edge) among stages of the breeding cycle, but Hammond’s Flycatchers did. Both species foraged in trees with different structural characteristics (diameter-at-breast height, tree height, and bole height) during different stages of the breeding cycle. For both species, differences in foraging patterns within specific stages of the breeding cycle were apparent when compared with data pooled across the breeding stages. Failure to partition the data by stage of the breeding cycle may mask significant sources of variation and preclude important insights into a species’ breeding biology.

Genetic variation in the narrow-clawed crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) populations as assessed by PCR-RFLP of mitochondrial COI gene

The genetic variation and population structure of narrow-clawed crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) was examined by means of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) of mitochondrial DNA. A total of 194 adult specimens were collected from seven sample sites including, two in the south Caspian Sea and one each...

Foraging Strategies are Related to Skull Morphology and Life History Traits of Melanerpes Woodpeckers

Links between morphology and foraging strategies have been well established for many vertebrate groups. Foraging strategies of Melanerpes woodpeckers are especially variable, with at least six species being proficient flycatchers; the remainder of the better known species do not flycatch. Our objective was to examine variation in foraging tactics as it relates to skull morphology and other life...

Estimating microsatellite based genetic diversity in Rhode Island Red chicken

This study aimed to estimate microsatellite based genetic diversity in two lines (the selected RIRS and control line RIRC) of Rhode Island Red (RIR) chicken. Genomic DNA of 24 randomly selected birds maintained at Central Avian Research Institute (India) and 24 microsatellite markers were used. Microsatellite alleles were determined on 6% urea-PAGE, recorded using GelDoc system and the samples ...

Karyotypic Variation of the Aloe vera L. and Aloe littoralis Baker in Iran

Background: We describe karyotypic variations and the in vitro methods for plant propagation and conservation as well as detailed chromosomal analysis of (Aloe vera L.) and Aloe littoralis from Iran during flowering stage. Objectives: This karyotypic was discovered because of a difference in the position of the chromosome and due to genomic differentiation in domesticated pop...

Identification of AFLP markers associated with flowering time and ornamental traits in Chrysanthemum

Flowering period and longevity play important roles in determining the quality of commercial flowers. Marker-trait associations for eight flowering and 12 ornamental traits have been studied using a GLM and MLM analysis with a set of 2099 AFLP polymorphic markers in Chrysanthemum. The GLM model identified 453 markers for phenotypic traits whereas the MLM association analysis model revealed a t...
